Subject: All-Time Record to be set today by Pirates
Posted: Sep 06, 2009 14:35 (GMT -5)
Today will mark a record in history of sports that will probably last forever. Consectitive losing seasons. 17 to be exact. So, that brings us into a new era that will take a long time to surpass. Could possibly be broken next year and the following and the following by the team that set the record.

This is not a big surprise to me, given the way the team has been managed over the years and the current management that is in place. No longer can the fans blame Dave Littlefield, Kam Bonifay, or even the managers of the past 17 seasons. It is the ownership that refuses to invest into a winning ball club. That is the bottom line. I think that the club should be investigated as to where the revenue sharing is being spent. It obviously is not on the field where it is intended.

If after 17 years you do not success, spend, spend again. That is spend millions of dollars in the Dominican for a new training facility instead of investing in the club directly. IN fact, make the state of Florida spend even more money to keep you in Bradenton to upgrade the facility and promise winning to the fans as a return.

The Pittsburgh PIrates have become the laughing stock of baseball. It is a shame becuase of the history that the club has and the many players that have come through the system which have had such an impact on the baseball world. However, those days are gone for now and there does not look to be a lot of change in the next couple of years to come. New ballpark, new managers, new employess, new GM's, new everything and nothing has improved. Therefore, one must look themselves in the mirror (owners) and ask the question, "How committed to winning are we"? Answer can be answered in 17 parts. I for one wish the PIrates well. However, there nees to be a spring cleaning of upper management because the free ride should be over after 17 years.
It is pretty obvious that nobody cares anymore. The team is starting to resemble the old Pirates. Now there is trade talk of Freddy Sanchez. I think they are cashing it in again. I think everyone is just frustrated and tired of talking about it anymore.

The new regime has not been able to change the chemistry of the team or the direction as they thought they could. I know that it has only been 2 seasons, but looks like things are going in that same direction. Football is not far away.
When I first became a member of this site nearly 3 years ago, it was pretty booming. However, I've noticed members posting less and less over the years that followed. Has the consecutive losing seasons finally gotten to everybody or what? This board is just about dead!
Consider also that many other scouts from many other teams were there to see the 2 reality stars' pitch, but The Pirates were the only MLB Club to offer them contracts.(At least that's what I heard from one of the writer's on KDKA's "Sunday Night Sports Showdown") Sadly, this story does not surprise me one bit. Shameful indeed.
The Pirates signing of the two reality game show participants is a down right shameful act. Come on, going into a new market to tap the talent is the excuse they are using. This is an act exactly like signing the midget by Bill Veeck back in the day. If you have had enough of the half brain acts of this ownership and management, stop supporting them. Until these people feel a crunch in the bank account, they will continue to do desperate acts to attract. This one is clear proof that they have lost touch. Neil Huntington stated that the prospects would need 4-5 years of minor league experience before they would be ready for the Major Leagues. This man should be fired on the spot for making such a idiotic statement.

I have an idea, lets bring back the team of 79 for the next season and see how much time they need in the minor leagues to get ready for Major League Baseball. At one point they were ready, but these guys have never picked up a glove before. What a joke the Pittsburgh Pirates have become and it is getting bigger and bigger everyday.
Since The Pirates started their 16 consecutive losing seasons back in 1993, 4 expansion teams,(Fla., Col., Az., T.B.), entered MLB. Not only have all 4 made the playoffs at least once, but all 4 have made it to The World Series, with Florida,(1997;2003), and Arizona,(2001), winning it all. Yet The Bucs can't be bothered to field a team to play .500+ baseball in that same timespan? What a joke.
Every year, the Pirates have the Steelers to thank for taking the focus off how bad they really are and how bad the management of this team really is. Of course, what do the Pirates care, they make money off the Steelers also. The Pirates should also thank the Steelers for keeping this city and region interested in sports in general. The Pirates are riding the coat tails of the Steelers and will continue to do so.
Both are in MLB. Littlefield is with the Cubs working in the MLB scounting department and Jim Tracy is a MLB scout too as well as other things. Littlefield was actually in town for the last game of the Cubs series and still lives in the area.

As you can see, maybe there were not as bad as what we have now. Kind of like politics, more of the same.
I don't care what your record is,what time of the year it is, or who the hell your playing, there is no excuse for what happened last week. I.E.- 3 losses in which the team had a sizeable lead, only to see the pitching staff,(both starters and relievers), piss it away. And it wasn't like it was to really good teams, either. 1 to The Reds and 2 to the horrid Giants, one of which they scored 10 runs in an inning to erase a 5-0 lead. 10 f****** runs!! A team like that shouldn't be scoring 10 runs in a game, let alone in one inning! Teams want to start digging in against you? Fine. Then start digging into their arms and ribs with fastballs. Then again that would actually take balls to do, something which this team is in short supply of.(Among other things.)
It's one thing to be overmatched and untalented.(Which they are.) But it's quite obvious to me that little to nobody on this team is even trying anymore. When I had the misfortune of watching 10 minutes of one of the games this past weekend, there seemed to be a collective,"Let's hurry up and get this game over with so we can get out of here" vibe. And this is the same squad that will be here next year and beyond? As far as Russell goes, you'd be calm too if your team could lose every game between now and the end of the season, yet still know that you'd be retaining your position. Accountability my a**.
I watched the game today and I must say that this team has nothing left. They are going to come very close to 100 lose season. I will say this for Littlefield, he had the only good trades that I have seen so far. Nady and Bay. Other than that, it has been a total joke. Littlefield had nothing to work with and Huntington is fooling himself if he really believes that he has anything to work with.

The field looks bad, the team looks bad, the stadium looks bad, this entire thing looks bad. I really thought that we would see an improvement, but it is not looking like it will be. Pitching is bad and they have given up more runs than any other team except Texas Rangers.
It's been nearly a month since management blew up the team for the umpteenth time in the last 15 years in another desparate attempt to make it look like they are trying to put a winner on the field. Whatever. Here are the players current stats The Pirates got who are playing with them now, compared to how the players they traded away are doing:

Pirates:

-Andy LaRoche; 2HR 5RBI .129AVG. (Just what the team needed. Another LaRoche who can't hit.)

-Brandon Moss; 4HR 8RBI .236AVG.(Has shown flashes that he may be good, but that's no gaurantee that he will.)

-Jeff Karstens; 2-3 3.48 ERA 1CG 1SHO. (Coming back to earth after his first 2 starts with the team.)

-Craig Hansen; 0-2 8.10 ERA 1SV 12BB 10INN

Yankees:

-Xavier Nady; 8HR 23RBI .308AVG.

-D.Marte; 0-2 7.15 ERA 0 SV

Red Sox:

-Jason Bay; 4HR 27RBI .327AVG.

**Gee, I wonder who made out better? Management better pray these players,(and the one's down in the minors, too), get real good real fast. If you were writing a comedy about a baseball team, I swear you couldn't come up with s*** as funny as this.(And I'm not even talking about that whole Alvarez mess. That's a separate thread.) Just pathetic.**
